My windows 10 crashed yesterday when I restarted it after loading the logo, a message appeared saying that "error loading operating system". So I restarted it again, but it showed the same message and I can even not open the boot menu.

"Error loading operating system" with a black screen is an irritating problem that is often witnessed by users when they try to boot their Windows PC. The start-up issue generally occurs after the fresh installation of the Windows operating system. Moreover, sudden power failure, system crash, or system restart can also cause such error.

Reasons for Error Loading Operating System Problem

1). Computer hard disk failures

The main reason for computer "error loading operating system" issues can often be caused by computer hard disk failures. When people are trying to boot the desired PC, the computer often needs to read the operating system information stored on the plugged computer hard disk until the system is booted at last. However, when the hard disk is damaged somehow or the important operating system data are filled with bad sectors or physically corrupted, the computer cannot recognize the desired operating system information and make the computer operating system load unsuccessfully.

2). Computer hard disk MBR information is not right

Once the hard disk MBR information becomes incorrect, the common computer operating system loading during booting is also likely to be negatively affectedly or stopped.

3). Computer operating system gets problems

Some damaged boot files or configuration files of your computer OS can also lead to computer error loading operating system problems.

4). Set PC hard disks incorrectly when there are multiple hard disks used on the same computer

5). Computer hard disk is not properly partitioned or the operating system partition is damaged

The improperly partitioned hard disk will affect the PC's operating system loading in daily use. And the hard drive's partition may be damaged because of disk write errors, power outages or virus attacks. If that's the case, the operating system cannot access the system files to boot properly and the loading process is halted.

How to Fix Error Loading Operating System Issue?

Solution 1: Properly Setup BIOS and CMOS

Press DEL/ F1 /F2 /ESC keys to enter BIOS/CMOS Setup. Set the hard disk with the operating system as the first boot hard disk. If necessary, please update your motherboard's BIOS by referring to the computer's manual or visiting the manufacturer's website.

Solution 2: Update your system BIOS to the latest version

Take extra care while updating the BIOS version. The reason is that the BIOS firmware may get corrupt in the process of data loss. Consequently, you might not be able to access your data. Thus, always follow the best practice to back up all your important files before performing the BIOS update so that you can access and work on them later.

Follow the below steps to update your computer BIOS:

1. Find the model of your motherboard. Check this out in the user manual of your mainboard.

2. Identify the current BIOS version. For this, open the System Information app. In the search box, type System Information and select System Summary. The BIOS version will be displayed.

3. Download the latest BIOS update. Visit the motherboard or laptop manufacturer's website. Search for the model of your system and from the list of available downloads go for the BIOS update.

4. Once downloaded, run the BIOS update.

5. Restart the computer after the BIOS update.

Solution 3: Recreate the partitions

The "Error loading operating system" error is more likely to appear if your partitions were also changed by another system before installing windows, e.g. a Linux distribution.

When you reinstall Windows 10, make sure you delete all partitions and create the partitions you need to install it.

Solution 4: Restore the MBR information of hard disk with bootrec.exe

bootrec.exe is a tool built in the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) which you can use to troubleshoot and repair the error. The steps for accessing bootrec.exe to rebuild the master boot sector:

       1. Insert your Windows 7 install disc

2. Restart your computer and boot from the CD

3. Press any key to boot from CD or DVD message

4. Choose to Repair your computer after you select the language, time and keyboard method

5. Select your Windows installation drive (usually C:\)

6. Click Next

7. Select Command Prompt from System Recovery Options

8. Type the following command and press Enter:

bootrec /FixMbr
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /ScanOs
bootrec /rebuildBcd

9. Type Exit. Press Enter and emove the CD/DVD,

10. Restart your computer

Solution 5: Reinstall your Windows operating system

When the above solutions do not solve the issue, the computer shows an "error loading operating system". And the hard drive is also working with no Physical Issues, then the best way is to reinstall the Windows operating system.
